Apple iPhones banned in China
The move is part of a multi-technology and multi-geography legal battle between smartphone chip supplier Qualcomm and leading smartphone vendor Apple, which increasingly wants to develop its own chips for use in its phones.
The Fuzhou Intermediate People’s Court has granted two preliminary injunctions against four Chinese subsidiaries of Apple Inc., ordering them to immediately cease the importation, sale and offers for sale in China of the iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and the iPhone X, Qualcomm said.
The court has upheld that Apple may be infringing on two Qualcomm patents that were previously found to be valid by SIPO, the Chinese patent office, the company added.
“Apple continues to benefit from our intellectual property while refusing to compensate us. These Court orders are further confirmation of the strength of Qualcomm’s vast patent portfolio,” said Don Rosenberg, executive vice president and general counsel for Qualcomm, in a statement.
The patents are related to the ability to adjust and reformat photographs and the ability to manage applications using a touchscreen at the same time as viewing, navigating and dismissing applications on the same phone.
Apple reportedly said in a statement that “all iPhone models remain available for our customers in China.”
