These are two of the key emerging technologies in computing and the collaboration will focus on the development and testing of neuromorphic and quantum computing circuits. The two research institutes say the collaboration should result in a digital hardware toolbox that can be used by European industrial partners across application domains. IMEC and CEA-LETI are inviting partners from academia and industry to join them in researching the two domains.

AI-at-the-edge is poised to become a key driver of economic development and could potentially address societal issues such as healthcare delivery and reduced environmental impact agriculture, according to IMEC.

“The ability to develop technologies such as AI and quantum computing – and put them into industrial use across a wide spectrum of applications – is one of Europe’s major challenges. Both quantum and neuromorphic computing – to enable artificial intelligence – are very promising areas of innovation, as they hold a huge industrialization potential,” said Luc Van den Hove, CEO of IMEC, in a statement. He added that the collaboration would result in business opportunities for European industry partners.

Emmanuel Sabonnadière, CEO of CEA-Leti CEO, said the agreement complemented earlier and ones with Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, the largest organization for applied research in Europe, will focus all three institute on digital hardware for AI, high performance computing and cyber-security applications.
